Tackifier Market Overview
To improve tack and peel adherence, tackifiers are low-molecular-weight chemicals known as oligomers that are added to adhesive formulations. However, their molecular weight is significantly lower than that of the base polymer, despite the fact that their glass transition temperature (Tg) is often higher. The tackifiers dissolve in the polymer matrix, which causes the structure of the polymer to be disrupted and ultimately results in an increase in the base polymer’s mobility and tack. They also provide functionality that encourages particular adhesion and reduces molecular cohesion, which, in turn, lowers the melt viscosity and softening point of the polymer system. They do this by reducing molecular cohesion.
Tackifiers can be broken down into a few different categories, the most important of which being hydrocarbon resins, rosin esters, and polyterpenes. Terpenes and rosin esters are derived from pine trees, whereas hydrocarbon resins are derived from feedstocks that come from the petroleum industry.
Esters of rosin are among the most ancient types of resin. Gum rosin, also known as tree sap, wood rosin, sometimes known as tree stumps, and tall oil rosin are the three most important forms (Kraft paper making process). Rosin esters are compatible with a wide variety of polymers and offer an exceptional level of tack. On the other hand, their costs are higher than those of hydrocarbon resins but lower than those of polyterpenes.
Tackifiers that are made of hydrocarbon resins are extremely common. They are created mostly from byproducts of the naphtha cracking process, which are derived from petroleum. Resins can be broken down into three primary categories: C5 aliphatic, C9 aromatic, and DCPD cyclo-aliphatic. They are occasionally hydrogenated in order to improve their resistance to heat and ultraviolet light as well as reduce any discoloration that may occur.
Terpene resins are created from terpentine oil, which can be obtained either from pine wood or citrus fruits. Citrus fruits are the more common source. The most valuable grades include pinene-based terpenes that have been changed with phenol or styrene, as well as polyterpenes based on pinene. They are compatible with a wide variety of polymers and had the largest amount of biorenewable content of any of the materials we looked at. PSAs and hot melt formulations benefit greatly from the addition of grades that have a high softening point since these grades have superior heat resistance, tack, and peel adherence. On the other hand, because of the greater cost involved, they are utilised much less frequently.
Because of their role in determining the tackifier resin’s solubility in the base polymer, the molecular weight (distribution) and polarity of the tackifier resin are two of the most important characteristics. A resin that is incompatible with the polymer will have very little effect on the characteristics of the polymer, and as a result, it will not produce any additional tack or adhesion. Resins with a high aromaticity are typically favoured for use with polar polymers like urethanes and acrylics. On the other hand, aliphatic resins are the superior option when working with nonpolar polymers like natural rubber and chloroprene. Finding the ideal balance of aliphatic and aromatic sections in the resin, as well as the optimal molecular weight, is necessary in order to create the optimal melt viscosity, as well as the greatest peel and tack.
